Iris is the most expensive material in perfumery and the least eager to please. It takes five years to turn a rhizome into orris butter, and the result smells less like a flower than like the idea of one — powdered, metallic, faintly cold. We built Cold Iris around that reluctance rather than against it, setting the orris on a bed of damp mineral and letting it stay austere for the first hour. What follows is warmer, but it never quite apologises.
